Shift in Vietnamese Car Preferences: SUVs Outpace Sedans Vietnam’s automotive market is undergoing a significant transformation, with a marked decline in sedan sales and a surge in demand for SUVs, crossovers, MPVs (multi-purpose vehicles), and pickups. According to data from the Vietnam Automobile Manufacturers Association (VAMA), sedan sales dropped to 13,364 units in the first half of 2026, the lowest in five years, while SUV sales rose to 40,001 units, becoming the most popular vehicle category. Sales Trends and Consumer Behavior The shift reflects changing consumer priorities. In 2022, sedans dominated the market, with 52,250 units sold, but their appeal has waned as buyers increasingly prioritize versatility and space. SUVs, crossovers, and MPVs now cater to diverse needs, including family trips, weekend excursions, and long-distance travel. For instance, 5-7-seater crossovers saw a 26% increase in sales, rising from 13,163 units in 2023 to 16,633 units in 2026. MPVs also gained traction, with 26,166 units sold in the first half of 2026, up 5,000 units from 2023. Pickups, despite regulatory challenges, maintained growth, with 13,000 units delivered to customers in 2026. Drivers of the Shift Industry experts attribute the trend to evolving consumer needs. Urban dwellers now prioritize vehicles that offer both comfort and practicality for daily commutes and long trips. SUVs and crossovers, with their spacious interiors, better visibility, and cargo capacity, align more closely with these demands. Additionally, the availability of affordable SUV models across multiple price segments has diluted the competitive advantage of sedans. Previously, SUVs were perceived as luxury items, but recent models now offer value-for-money options in the 500–700 million VND range, making them accessible to a broader audience.#vietnam #suv #vama #sedan #crossover
