India Formalizes Names of 27 Locations in Arunachal Pradesh Amid Border Dispute On August 7, 2026, India officially marked 27 locations in the border state of Arunachal Pradesh on its Survey of India map, asserting their standard names to counter China’s attempts to rename them. The Union Home Ministry stated that this move aims to ensure accurate recognition and public awareness of these sites, which hold historical, strategic, and cultural significance. The decision comes amid ongoing tensions over territorial claims between India and China, with the latter frequently attempting to alter the names of places in the region. The 27 locations include Long Ju, a site along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) that became a flashpoint during the 1959 border conflict when Chinese forces entered the area. Maja, a village near Long Ju in Upper Subansiri district, was also marked. The list features Bisa village, a high-altitude mountain pass critical to military operations, along with other passes such as Dzo La, Riza La, and Pukur La. Thag La, a strategically vital high-altitude pass, was formally identified due to its role in the 1962 Sino-Indian War, where an initial battle between the two nations occurred. Jairampur, a key logistics hub in Changlang district, was highlighted as the gateway to the eastern border region, supporting movements of security forces toward eastern Arunachal Pradesh and the Myanmar frontier. The map also includes Sambho Sarovar, a high-altitude lake, and Bara Kundun and Chhota Kundun in Eastern Arunachal Pradesh. Other locations marked are Dhan Bari, Pritnagar, Teritnagar, Ramnagar, and Jaswant Garh, which houses a memorial for Indian martyr Jaswant Singh Rawat on Tawang Road. Villages such as Sagar, Padma, Jyotinagar, and Baisakhi were also listed.#india #china #arunachal_pradesh #line_of_actual_control #sher_e_thapa_memorial
