VTA Urges Maharashtra Government to Review Electricity Tariff Structure The Vidarbha Taxpayers Association (VTA) has called on the Maharashtra government and the Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission (MERC) to conduct a comprehensive review of the state’s electricity tariff structure, citing the growing financial burden on households, businesses, and industries. During a meeting chaired by VTA president Shrawan Kumar Malu, the association emphasized the need to address the rising costs of electricity and their cascading effects on the economy. The VTA argued that the current tariff system imposes an unsustainable burden on consumers, with higher electricity costs leading to increased prices for goods and services. The association proposed that the review should extend beyond per-unit energy charges to encompass all components of the electricity cost, including fixed and demand charges, Fuel Adjustment Charges (FAC), Time-of-Day (ToD) charges, wheeling charges, and electricity duty. Malu highlighted that the existing structure discourages investment in renewable energy sources such as rooftop and captive solar power, urging the authorities to create a system that incentivizes such initiatives. The VTA secretary, Tejinder Singh Renu, further stated that electricity tariff policies should align with the government’s broader goals of promoting industries, micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), tourism, and employment generation.
