Gender Equality Goals at Risk Without Community-Led Solutions – WD2026 As the world marks World Development Information Day 2026, experts warn that gender equality goals are under threat unless community-led solutions are implemented. The United Nations' Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 5, which aims to achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls, is facing significant challenges in achieving its targets. Despite progress made in some areas, the global gender gap remains wide, with women still earning only 77 cents for every dollar earned by men. The COVID-19 pandemic has further exacerbated these inequalities, with women disproportionately affected by job losses, reduced social support networks, and increased care responsibilities. To bridge this gap, community-led initiatives are crucial in identifying and addressing the unique challenges faced by local communities. These solutions must be tailored to the specific needs of women and girls in different regions, taking into account cultural, economic, and environmental factors. In Bangladesh, for instance, community-based organizations have made significant strides in promoting gender equality through education and skills training programs. Similar initiatives are also being implemented in other parts of Asia, Africa, and Latin America.
