Tapping Vidarbha’s Heat: VRS Conference Explores Renewable Energy Potential The Vidarbha Research Society (VRS), a 93-year-old organization based in Nagpur, is set to host a one-day conference on renewable energy on June 20 at its Civil Lines premises. Titled “Empowering Vidarbha's Growth Through Renewable Energy,” the event aims to explore how the region’s abundant sunshine can be harnessed for sustainable development. The conference will be organized in collaboration with the Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology (VNIT), Nagpur, the Mahatma Gandhi Institute for Rural Industrialization (MGIRI), Wardha, and the Solar Energy Society of India (SESI). It is part of VRS’s “Be The Change” initiative, which encourages youth-led discussions on innovative solutions for regional growth. Parag Pandharipande, working president of VRS, emphasized that Vidarbha’s scorching summers, often seen as a challenge, present a unique opportunity. He noted that the region’s high temperatures and ample sunlight make it well-suited for solar energy adoption. “Experts will discuss opportunities, challenges, and pathways for expanding renewable energy in Vidarbha,” Pandharipande said. The conference will focus on strategies to integrate solar power into the region’s infrastructure, addressing both economic and environmental benefits. Prafulla Pathak, president of the Solar Energy Society of India, highlighted how Vidarbha’s extreme summer conditions could be transformed into an advantage. While the heat is traditionally viewed as a burden, Pathak argued that the region’s climate is ideal for solar energy generation.
