Boats Pressed Into Service, Homes Flooded Across City, 461 Rescued A cloudburst-like downpour on Nagpur on Tuesday overwhelmed the city’s stormwater drainage system, turning major roads into rivers and submerging underpasses in murky water. The deluge forced authorities to deploy boats for rescue operations as floodwaters entered homes across the city. The Nagpur Municipal Corporation’s (NMC) fire and emergency services department launched a massive rescue effort, evacuating 461 people from affected areas. Firefighters responded to 37 emergency calls, including 21 related to waterlogging, four tree-fall incidents, and 12 rescue operations. Inflatable boats were used to rescue 197 students, teachers, and senior citizens from Tip Top Convent in Swawlambi Nagar. Nearly 300 students from Somalwar schools were also evacuated using ropes after floodwaters surrounded their campuses. Four residents trapped in Suryoday Nagar, Narsala, were shifted to safety. The rescue efforts extended to Biodiversity Park near Ambazari, where National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) personnel and fire department teams saved four people stranded after water levels rose rapidly. Several key roads, including Pratap Nagar, Khamla, Ring Road, Padole Hospital Square, Narendra Nagar, Shatabdi Square, Swawlambi Nagar, Laxmi Nagar, Manish Nagar, Besa, and Gittikhadan, remained submerged for hours, causing traffic to grind to a near standstill. Cars were seen floating in floodwaters along the Chhatrapati Square-Khamla Square stretch of Ring Road.
