No Relief, Bills Accurate, Pay Up: Discom To Shocked Users Thousands of electricity consumers in Nagpur and Wardha who faced steep power bills flocked to MSEDCL’s grievance redressal and smart meter awareness camps on Wednesday, seeking explanations for their rising costs. However, most left without resolution, as officials repeatedly asserted that their bills were accurate and demanded payment. The Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Ltd (MSEDCL) had organized nearly 200 outreach camps to address billing complaints and dispel misconceptions about smart meters. Despite claims of over 8,000 attendees, many consumers reported that their bills had doubled or tripled in recent months, despite no significant change in household electricity usage. At the camps, officials often began by asking consumers about their use of air-conditioners. Those who admitted to using one or more were told that the higher bills were due to prolonged summer conditions and increased consumption. For consumers who questioned the accuracy of smart meters, officials directed them to apply for a meter accuracy test, which required a fee of around ₹220. This response left many skeptical, as they felt the explanations were insufficient to address their concerns. Suraj Gangamwar, a resident of Narendra Nagar, noted that his June bill was nearly twice his usual amount, yet officials insisted the readings were correct. Many consumers expressed frustration, arguing that their daily electricity usage had remained unchanged. While some accepted the technical explanations, they remained unconvinced about the unusually high units recorded in their bills. Several stated they had expected detailed verification or immediate relief, rather than being told their bills reflected their usage.#nagpur #wardha #masedcl #narendra_nagar #suraj_gangamwar
