The sustained monsoon showers have caused Tansa to join Vihar and Tulsi as the third reservoir to spill this monsoon season, with combined water stocks across all reservoirs reaching 62% of total capacity. This increase in water reserves is a critical development for the city’s water supply amid ongoing rainfall. The IMD issued an orange alert for Mumbai, Thane, and Raigad on Wednesday, forecasting heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated locations with wind speeds of 50-60 kmph, gusting up to 70 kmph. Palghar remains under a red alert, with extremely heavy rainfall expected at isolated places. The alert for Mumbai and Thane was downgraded to yellow on Thursday, indicating heavy rainfall at isolated spots. Rainfall activity is expected to ease from Friday, with light to moderate rain anticipated across the region. Rainfall measurements recorded by the IMD’s Colaba observatory showed 35.6 mm of rain in the 24 hours ending 8:30 am on Wednesday, while Santacruz logged 48.4 mm. Thane recorded 88.63 mm, and Navi Mumbai received an average of 61.17 mm. The continuous rainfall in the catchment areas has led to a rapid rise in reservoir levels, with Tansa Lake beginning to overflow at 8:51 am on Wednesday.
