Used Car Study 2026: Maruti Baleno Holds Its Value Best Among Midsize Hatches The fourth edition of Autocar India’s Used Car Study, conducted in collaboration with Spinny, India’s leading pre-owned car platform, has revealed that the Maruti Baleno maintains the highest resale value among midsize hatchbacks in the country. The study analyzed real-world depreciation trends across a wide range of vehicles sold in the Indian market between January 1 and August 31, 2025, using transactional data from Spinny’s network. In the premium hatchback segment, the Maruti Baleno and its sibling, the Toyota Glanza, emerged as the top performers. Despite being mechanically identical, the Toyota-badged model consistently commanded a slight premium in the used car market, attributed to stronger brand perception and Toyota’s reputation for reliability. The Tata Altroz, the only diesel-powered option in the segment, showed depreciation trends aligned with its petrol-powered counterparts, indicating balanced demand across fuel types. The study found that the average selling price of a five-year-old premium hatchback on Spinny’s platform was Rs 6.43 lakh. For three-year-old and one-year-old models, the average prices were Rs 8.27 lakh and Rs 8.67 lakh, respectively. Over the same periods, depreciation rates amounted to 42.8%, 32.7%, and 21.4%, highlighting the significant drop in value over time. The methodology of the study focused on average selling prices (ASPs) across nine major cities in India, including Delhi-NCR, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Pune, Chennai, Mumbai, Lucknow, Ahmedabad, and Kolkata. Depreciation was calculated as the percentage difference between a vehicle’s original on-road price at the time of manufacture and its resale value in 2025. Models with multiple engine options or variants were averaged to ensure consistency.#maruti_baleno #toyota_glanza #tata_altroz #spinny #autocar_india
