Where Are My Green Nets? Bengal Vote Delays Shade Nagpur commuters are enduring sweltering temperatures exceeding 44°C as the city’s plan to install green shade nets at key traffic junctions faces a significant delay. The Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) had cleared its proposal to erect these structures, which are designed to shield pedestrians from the scorching summer heat, but the project has been stalled due to the ongoing West Bengal elections. Despite initial approvals, the work has progressed slowly, with only a handful of junctions currently under installation. The NMC’s initiative involves setting up large, wind-resistant frames at strategic locations. This task relies heavily on a specialized migrant workforce from West Bengal, who are known for their expertise in assembling such structures. However, the West Bengal elections have disrupted this process. Many workers have returned home to vote, creating a manpower shortage that has slowed the project’s timeline. "Most of our workforce comes from Bengal, and with elections underway, many have left," said a senior NMC official. "This has created a sudden gap in our resources." Installations are currently underway at Indora Chowk, Telephone Exchange Square, Tukdoji Putla, and Chhapru Nagar Chowk. Work at RBI Square is expected to begin during night hours. Contractors are scrambling to replace the missing workforce or waiting for workers to return after polling phases conclude in early May. Even where work has started, the pace has slowed due to limited hands. "We are trying to convince workers to come back, but even framing the structure takes time. This is not plug-and-play," another official admitted.#nagpur_municipal_corporation #west_bengal_elections #indora_chowk #telephone_exchange_square #tukdoji_putla
