UDISE+ 2025-26 Report Reveals Sharp Decline in Government School Enrollments The Union Department of School Education and Literacy (UDISE+) 2025-26 report has revealed a significant drop in student enrollments in government schools over the past two years. According to the data, the number of students enrolled in government schools fell by 86 lakh (8.6 million) between the academic years 2023-24 and 2025-26. In contrast, private schools saw an increase of 88 lakh students during the same period. The report, released by the Ministry of Education, highlights a stark shift in enrollment trends across the country. The report provides a comprehensive overview of educational infrastructure, student enrollment, and teacher-student ratios. It states that the total number of enrollments in government schools decreased from 12.75 crore (127.5 million) in 2023-24 to 11.89 crore in 2025-26. Meanwhile, private schools recorded an increase from 9 crore to 9.89 crore enrollments. This trend underscores a growing preference for private education among families, despite the government’s efforts to expand access to public schooling. The report also notes a decline in the number of government schools. The total number of schools fell from 14.72 lakh (1.472 million) to 14.67 lakh. However, the number of teachers increased slightly, rising from 98.08 lakh to 103 crore. This led to an improvement in the teacher-student ratio, which dropped from 25 to 24. The report further highlights that 5,663 schools had zero enrollments, indicating a severe lack of access to education in certain regions.
