Blaze At Seven-Storey Ramdaspeth Building, Fire Safety Systems Fail A fire broke out in a gym located within a seven-storey building at Ramdaspeth in Nagpur on Monday, leading to a significant firefighting operation. The incident began around 11 a.m. when an air-conditioning unit in the gym on the first floor caught fire due to a short circuit. The flames quickly spread to the second floor, creating dense smoke that forced occupants to evacuate the structure. Firefighters faced challenges due to sealed windows and balconies, which restricted ventilation and hindered their efforts. Corporator Vinay Dani alerted the Nagpur Municipal Corporation control room, prompting the dispatch of four fire tenders to the scene. A team led by fire officers Bhagwan Wagh, Sunil Dokre, and Ravindra Marskolhe worked for nearly an hour to bring the blaze under control. During the operation, a 59-year-old woman, Bharti Battu, was rescued from Room No. 305 on the third floor. No injuries were reported among the occupants. The incident exposed critical failures in the building’s fire safety measures. Chief Fire Officer Tushar Barahate stated that while the building was equipped with mandatory firefighting installations, they were non-functional during the emergency. He emphasized that proper maintenance could have contained the fire much earlier. The fire damaged two outdoor AC units and parts of the central air-conditioning ducting system. Fire officials confirmed plans to conduct a detailed inspection and issue notices to the building’s management for neglecting safety protocols.
