Residents Along River, Nullah Banks Dread Flood Fury Amid Missing Retaining Walls Residents in Nagpur, particularly those living near rivers and nullahs, are increasingly worried about the risks of flooding due to the absence or severe damage of retaining walls. The issue has become a pressing concern after repeated monsoon seasons caused widespread inundation, submerging roads, homes, and posing threats to safety. New Ahbab Colony in Mahesh Nagar has been a focal point, where the nullah flowing through the area lacks any retaining structure, leading to floodwaters spilling into residential areas during heavy rains. Similar vulnerabilities exist in other neighborhoods like Welcome Society, Suraj Nagar, Sangam Nagar, Godavari Colony, and others, where residents have long expressed frustration over the lack of permanent solutions. Zafar Solanki, a local resident and social activist, highlighted the community’s plight, stating that promises to rebuild drain walls were made before recent elections but remain unfulfilled. “Every monsoon, drain water floods homes, causing losses and hardship,” he said, emphasizing the need for immediate action. The Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has acknowledged the crisis, identifying 29.651 km of damaged or missing retaining walls across the city. A Detailed Project Report (DPR) has been prepared for the construction and reconstruction of retaining walls and four bridges, with an estimated cost of ₹856.31 crore. This initiative aims to serve as a long-term flood mitigation measure. Municipal Commissioner Vipin Itankar confirmed that the NMC has submitted the proposal to the state urban development department for funding.
