The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has filed a case against Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, the U.S.-based general counsel of the banned Khalistani organization Sikhs for Justice (SFJ), for allegedly offering a ₹11 crore reward to "Sikh soldiers" to prevent Prime Minister Narendra Modi from hoisting the national flag at the Red Fort on Independence Day. The incident occurred during a "Meet the Press" event at the Lahore Press Club in Pakistan on August 10, 2025, where Pannun rejected India's sovereignty over Punjab and promoted Khalistan. In a related development, Inderjit Singh Gosal, a close associate and bodyguard of Pannun, was arrested in Ottawa, Canada, on multiple firearms-related charges. Gosal has been a significant figure in SFJ’s Canadian operations, especially after the 2023 killing of pro-Khalistan activist Hardeep Singh Nijjar.
