AIIMS-Nagpur to Lead Maharashtra’s First Cohesive Childhood NCD Care Plan The State Public Health Department of Maharashtra announced on Thursday the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Nagpur, in collaboration with Unicef Maharashtra. The agreement aims to strengthen the prevention and management of childhood non-communicable diseases (NCDs) through a systems-based approach. The MoU was formalized in the presence of Health Minister Prakash Abitkar, MLA Nana Patole, Maharashtra Unicef chief Sanjay Singh, and other officials. This initiative marks Maharashtra’s first comprehensive strategy to address the growing burden of childhood NCDs, which include conditions such as type 1 diabetes, asthma, obesity, and mental health disorders. India has seen a significant rise in childhood NCDs, with early onset leading to long-term health and economic challenges. The collaboration between AIIMS Nagpur, Unicef Maharashtra, and the state government seeks to create scalable models of care by integrating clinical expertise with public health delivery. In death, Wardha accident victim gives life to four A 47-year-old man from Seloo in Wardha district, Atul Gajananrao Deole, became a beacon of hope after his tragic accident, as his organs were donated to four patients following his brain death. The incident unfolded on April 4 when Deole, traveling on a two-wheeler near Butibori, met with a severe road accident. Despite intensive medical treatment over five days, doctors at AIIMS Nagpur confirmed he suffered a severe brain hemorrhage and declared him brain dead after completing all necessary protocols. The family’s decision to donate his organs was facilitated by the hospital’s transplant coordinators, Pooja Sulaniya, Divya Gaygole, and Vishal Handuge. After counseling, Deole’s wife, Rajni, and his family members consented to the donation. His liver, kidneys, and corneas were retrieved and allocated in accordance with national guidelines through ZTCC Nagpur. The allocation process was overseen by ZTCC Nagpur’s president, Dr. Manish Shrigiriwar, and secretary, Dr. Shailesh Gahukar. The liver was successfully transplanted into a 56-year-old patient, while the kidneys were allocated to two recipients—one at AIIMS Nagpur and another at a private hospital. The corneas were retained at AIIMS for further use. The brain death panel included Dr. Shrigiriwar, Dr. Sucheta Meshram, Dr. Sourabh Zambre, and Dr. Kiran Prathipati, ensuring the process adhered to strict medical standards.
