FSSAI Imposes Ban on Popular Liquor Brands Over Artificial Flavoring The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has imposed a ban on the sale of several popular liquor brands, including Old Monk, Bagpiper, Royal Challenge (RC), and Antique Blue, due to the detection of artificial flavoring in their products. The decision follows laboratory tests that revealed the use of artificial or nature-identical flavoring agents, which are not permitted under the manufacturing standards for alcoholic beverages. The banned products include specific variants of these brands. In Madhya Pradesh, the sale of Antique Blue Whisky and Royal Challenge Whisky produced by United Spirits Limited, as well as Bagpiper Deluxe Whisky and Old Cask Deluxe XXX Rum by Inbrü Beverages, has been prohibited. In Maharashtra, three variants of Old Monk produced by Mohan Rocky Spring Water are also under restriction. However, it remains unclear whether the ban applies to products manufactured in these regions or to all variants of these brands nationwide. The FSSAI investigation found that some liquor brands used artificial flavoring to mimic the taste and aroma of alcohol. For instance, bottles labeled as rum were found to contain artificial rum flavoring, while whisky bottles were found to have artificial whisky flavoring. According to FSSAI guidelines, the use of artificial flavoring in alcoholic beverages is not allowed, as natural ingredients and proper maturation processes are required to produce authentic spirits. India is one of the world’s largest liquor markets, with an estimated annual revenue of around $40 billion. The domestic liquor industry plays a significant role in the economy, with companies like United Spirits Limited (a subsidiary of Diageo India) being among the top producers.#fssai #old_monk #bagpiper #royal_challenge #antique_blue
