The legal proceedings began with a private complaint filed by advocate K Dilip Kumar, who alleged that Raj’s name appeared in electoral rolls for the Shantinagar Assembly constituency in Bengaluru, as well as two entries in Velachery Assembly constituency in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, and one entry in Serilingampally Assembly constituency in Telangana. Kumar argued that this violated Sections 17 and 18 of the Representation of the People Act, 1951, which prohibit individuals from being registered in more than one constituency or filing false declarations about their electoral status. The complaint also referenced Section 31, which penalizes false declarations related to electoral rolls, and Section 125A, which outlines punishments for submitting false affidavits. The court initially issued summons to Raj in February 2026, but he failed to appear, prompting the issuance of a non-bailable warrant (NBW).
