Researchers Discover Four New Medicinal Herb Species in Bhandara, Maharashtra Botanical surveys conducted in Bhandara district have led to the identification of four previously undocumented species of the genus Tinospora, commonly known as Guduchi or Amrita. These discoveries, made by researchers from Vidarbha and Madhya Pradesh, mark the first time these species have been recorded in Maharashtra. The findings, published in the Journal of the Indian Botanical Society, highlight significant advancements in plant taxonomy, biodiversity conservation, and the study of medicinal plants. The study was spearheaded by Dr. Jagannath Gadpayle of SN Mor College, Tumsar (Bhandara), along with Prof. Subhash Somkuwar from Dr. Ambedkar College, Nagpur, Dr. Shakun Mishra of Khandwa (Madhya Pradesh), and Prof. Alka A Chaturvedi of Nagpur. The team identified four Tinospora species—Tinospora baenzigeri, Tinospora merrilliana, Tinospora neocaledonica, and Tinospora smilacina—as previously unrecorded in the region. Their research includes detailed taxonomic descriptions, diagnostic features, and observations on flowering and fruiting patterns, along with morphological details of fruits and seeds. Identification keys were also provided to distinguish these species from others. The genus Tinospora holds a prominent place in traditional medicinal systems such as Ayurveda, Siddha, Unani, and homeopathy. Guduchi, in particular, is traditionally valued for its role in supporting immunity, aiding recovery from illness, and promoting overall health. However, the researchers emphasize that accurate identification of Tinospora species is critical.#maharashtra #bhandara #tinospora #journal_of_the_indian_botanical_society #dr_jagannath_gadpayle
