State Muslim Panel Seeks Extension for SIR Process Nagpur: A high-level delegation from the Federation of Maharashtra Muslims (FMM) recently met with the state’s chief electoral officer to discuss challenges faced during the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process. The delegation submitted a detailed memorandum outlining the difficulties encountered by citizens and proposed measures to enhance transparency, fairness, and accessibility in the electoral process. The memorandum emphasized that the current duration of the enumeration phase is insufficient, citing factors such as heavy rainfall, the agricultural sowing season, displacement due to redevelopment and demolition drives, and other logistical hurdles. The delegation requested an extension of the enumeration period by at least two months, as no immediate elections are planned in Maharashtra. The delegation informed the chief electoral officer that since the start of the SIR process, the FMM has established awareness campaigns and facilitation centers across the state. These centers, staffed by volunteers, have been assisting citizens with the enumeration process and fostering cooperation with Booth Level Officers (BLOs). The federation also highlighted concerns that several voters who successfully participated in the 2024 elections are now unable to locate their names or EPIC records during the current enumeration phase. The delegation urged that such voters should not be forced to apply as fresh applicants without valid justification.#maharashtra #special_intensive_revision #chief_electoral_officer #booth_level_officers #federation_of_maharashtra_muslims

Over 3,600 soybean seed complaints across Maharashtra; 4 FIRs filed against seed firms Maharashtra’s agriculture department has escalated its crackdown on seed companies following a surge in complaints about substandard soybean seeds during the kharif season. Over 3,615 complaints have been registered across the state, with officials estimating that nearly 6,000 hectares of farmland—primarily in Vidarbha and parts of Marathwada—have been impacted. Complaints have been received from major soybean-growing districts including Akola, Amravati, Buldhana, Yavatmal, and 16 other regions. In response, the department has launched extensive inspections, collecting 5,638 seed samples for testing at laboratories in Nagpur and other locations. Preliminary results revealed that 581 samples failed to meet quality standards, prompting the filing of four FIRs against seed companies in Akola, Amravati, Wardha, and Yavatmal. Further criminal cases are expected as investigations continue. Sunil Borkar, director of quality control and inputs in the agriculture department, emphasized the gravity of the issue. “Around 6,000 hectares of soybean farms have been affected. We are surprised the problem occurred despite seeds being tested in government laboratories. We are conducting a scientific investigation to determine the exact cause,” he stated. One notable case involved a complaint filed by Babhulgaon police in Yavatmal district against Jalna-based Booster Plant Genetics Pvt. Ltd. Farmers alleged that seeds sold by the company failed to germinate under normal sowing conditions. Seed inspector Dattatraya Tamalwad, after field inspections and lab testing, registered the FIR.#maharashtra #amravati #akola #soybean #booster_plant_genetics_pvt_ltd

Monsoon In Bursts: Why Several States Are Flooded In 'Below-Normal' Year The first eight days of July brought a sharp increase in rainfall across several parts of the country, triggering floods, landslides, and cloudbursts despite an overall southwest monsoon rainfall deficit of 15.2% for the season. According to the India Meteorological Department, cumulative rainfall from June 1 to July 8, 2026, totaled 195.5 mm, falling short of the 1971-2020 normal of 230.4 mm. This deficit has raised concerns about the distribution of rainfall, as intense but short-lived downpours have caused widespread damage even in regions with below-normal totals. The uneven pattern of rainfall has led to extreme weather events in multiple states. In Kerala, Wayanad district experienced a 56% rainfall deficit since the monsoon began, yet heavy rain over two days in early July triggered landslides that killed five people. Despite the district remaining 26% below normal for the season, the concentrated rainfall on July 7 and 8—41% and 27% above normal, respectively—highlighted the risk of flooding and landslides in deficit areas. Similarly, Jammu and Kashmir faced cloudbursts, including in Doda district, where intense rainfall of 100 mm or more within an hour damaged homes, roads, and infrastructure. While most districts in the region remained in the normal or deficit category, areas like Samba and Udhampur recorded 83% and 79% excess rainfall, respectively. Maharashtra also saw severe impacts, with heavy rain causing flooding, waterlogging, and landslides in several districts. Mumbai and surrounding areas faced widespread disruption, including traffic gridlock and stranded vehicles. In Gurugram, major roads became severely waterlogged, halting normal activities.#maharashtra #climate_change #india_meteorological_department #jammu_and_kashmir #kerala_wayanad
Researchers Discover Four New Medicinal Herb Species in Bhandara, Maharashtra Botanical surveys conducted in Bhandara district have led to the identification of four previously undocumented species of the genus Tinospora, commonly known as Guduchi or Amrita. These discoveries, made by researchers from Vidarbha and Madhya Pradesh, mark the first time these species have been recorded in Maharashtra. The findings, published in the Journal of the Indian Botanical Society, highlight significant advancements in plant taxonomy, biodiversity conservation, and the study of medicinal plants. The study was spearheaded by Dr. Jagannath Gadpayle of SN Mor College, Tumsar (Bhandara), along with Prof. Subhash Somkuwar from Dr. Ambedkar College, Nagpur, Dr. Shakun Mishra of Khandwa (Madhya Pradesh), and Prof. Alka A Chaturvedi of Nagpur. The team identified four Tinospora species—Tinospora baenzigeri, Tinospora merrilliana, Tinospora neocaledonica, and Tinospora smilacina—as previously unrecorded in the region. Their research includes detailed taxonomic descriptions, diagnostic features, and observations on flowering and fruiting patterns, along with morphological details of fruits and seeds. Identification keys were also provided to distinguish these species from others. The genus Tinospora holds a prominent place in traditional medicinal systems such as Ayurveda, Siddha, Unani, and homeopathy. Guduchi, in particular, is traditionally valued for its role in supporting immunity, aiding recovery from illness, and promoting overall health. However, the researchers emphasize that accurate identification of Tinospora species is critical.#maharashtra #bhandara #tinospora #journal_of_the_indian_botanical_society #dr_jagannath_gadpayle

Cow-based economy can shield farmers from any crisis: Fadnavis Nagpur: Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis emphasized on Sunday that reviving a cow-based economy could provide a safeguard against agrarian crises, pledging his government’s unwavering support for the state’s cow-welfare commission and cattle-rearers. Speaking at the conclusion of the Rajyamata Gomata Samvad Yatra, a 15-day, 30-district outreach initiative organized by the Maharashtra Gosewa Aayog covering 6,000 kilometers, Fadnavis highlighted the historical significance of the indigenous cow in fostering self-reliance in agriculture. He argued that the decline of this traditional system had contributed to the current distress faced by farmers. Fadnavis described the indigenous cow as a symbol of prosperity, stating that its ability to thrive with minimal resources—eating and drinking less while producing throughout its life—made it a cornerstone of sustainable farming. He criticized the shift toward chemical farming, which he claimed exhausted soil and compromised long-term productivity. Instead, he promoted natural farming methods rooted in cow dung and urine, citing practices like jeevamrut as effective alternatives that reduced chemical use without sacrificing crop yields. The CM also referenced a 2007-08 study on farmer suicides, noting that farmers who owned cows were less likely to contemplate suicide even during adverse conditions, while those without cattle showed a higher tendency toward such despair. This, he argued, underscored the critical role of cattle in maintaining mental and economic stability among rural communities. Fadnavis outlined plans to transform cow-rearing into a viable economic sector through research and value addition.#maharashtra #devendra_fadnavis #rajyamata_gomata_samvad_yatra #maharashtra_gosewa_aayog #go_ten

Smart Meters and Hidden Leaks: MSEDCL Explains Surge in Power Bills Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Ltd (MSEDCL) has clarified that the recent rise in electricity bills for many consumers is due to the accurate measurement of electricity consumption by smart meters, which now capture previously undetected losses such as hidden leakages, faulty wiring, and minor power losses that older meters overlooked. The utility attributed the increase in bills to both the higher electricity demand during the summer months and the transition to smart meters, which provide a more precise record of usage. According to MSEDCL, smart meters are capable of recording even small amounts of electricity consumption that older meters failed to capture. These include losses caused by poor earthing, internal leakages, and other unnoticed electrical inefficiencies within homes. Bharat Pawar, MSEDCL’s chief public relations officer, explained that the shift to smart meters has led to more transparent billing, as consumers now see the full extent of their electricity usage, including previously unaccounted losses. "The biggest reason for higher bills is the sharp increase in electricity consumption during summer," Pawar said. "Older meters did not record leakages or small consumptions, which led to losses for MSEDCL. Smart meters now detect and record every small loss, giving consumers an accurate reflection of their usage." Pawar also highlighted that many consumers may be unaware of the electricity drawn by appliances in standby mode, such as televisions and air-conditioners, which continue to consume power even when switched off. He emphasized that the new meters provide a more comprehensive view of consumption patterns, which could explain the perception of higher bills among some users.#maharashtra #electricity_bills #smart_meters #masedcl #bharat_pawar

After weeks of extreme heat and oppressive humidity, millions across India may finally experience relief as the southwest monsoon gains strength and spreads steadily. According to the IMD, the monsoon is projected to reach Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, and other northern regions by late June, marking a major shift in weather patterns. The rapid progress of the monsoon has already transformed conditions in western and central India, where widespread rainfall has intensified. While these rains are expected to lower soaring temperatures, they have also prompted alerts for heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, strong winds, and lightning across over 18 states. Northern states are seeing increased pre-monsoon activity due to the influence of a western disturbance and cyclonic circulations in the upper atmosphere. Cloudy skies, isolated showers, and thunderstorms have been reported in several regions, signaling the approaching monsoon.#maharashtra #mumbai #india_meteorological_department #goa #konkan

More Water In Vidarbha Dams Than Rest Of Maha Despite concerns over a potential El Nino impact, dams in the Vidarbha region of Maharashtra are currently holding more water than other parts of the state. According to data from the state’s water resources department, reservoirs in the Nagpur division are filled to over 30% of their capacity, nearly matching levels recorded last year. In the Amravati division, reservoirs are at 37.64%, slightly higher than the same period in 2023. However, overall water levels across Maharashtra have declined by 2% in the past week, with large parts of the state still awaiting significant rainfall. Combined storage across nearly 3,000 big, medium, and small dams has dropped from over 24% last week to 22.68% as of June 24. In just two days, levels fell from 23.19% to 22.68%, a decrease of 0.51%. The situation is particularly dire in the Pune division, where dam storage has fallen to just 13%, compared to more than 44% at the same time last year. The Konkan division also faces severe shortages, with reservoirs at 27% capacity, down from around 50% in 2023. The state government has taken measures to conserve water, directing officials to halt the release of water for irrigation until August 31. Strict monitoring will be enforced to prevent unauthorized water lifting from canals by farmers. The agriculture department has advised farmers to delay sowing operations until at least 100 mm of rainfall is recorded. The decline in water levels has left 18 dams across the state completely dry. Against the total storage capacity of 40,861 million cubic metres (MCM), the current water stock stands at just over 9,200 MCM. Officials have emphasized the need for careful management of remaining reserves, as the state continues to face prolonged dry spells.#nagpur #maharashtra #pune #amravati #vidarbha

Power Outages in Nagpur: CM Warns of Strict Action Against Discom Officials Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis addressed concerns over frequent power outages in Nagpur and other parts of Maharashtra, vowing strict action against Mahavitaran officials who failed to respond to consumer complaints. Speaking in the state assembly, Fadnavis acknowledged the inconvenience caused by summer-related disruptions, particularly in Nagpur and his Southwest constituency. He emphasized that accountability would be enforced against officers and employees who ignored complaints, stating, “Action will be taken against those who do not take note of consumer grievances.” Fadnavis attributed the strain on the power network to a surge in demand, driven by prolonged summer conditions and increased industrial activity. Maharashtra’s electricity consumption rose by 19.5% compared to the previous year, with an additional 4,000 MW of demand during peak seasons. While electricity was supplied to meet this demand, the infrastructure struggled to handle the load, leading to localized outages. “The sharp rise in consumption placed additional stress on existing systems, resulting in disruptions,” he explained. To address the crisis, Fadnavis announced plans to expedite two new power substations in Nagpur, with land already approved for both projects. These substations are expected to benefit both the West and Southwest constituencies. A review meeting was scheduled to fast-track the development. Additionally, the government outlined Mahavitaran’s long-term strategy to meet rising electricity demand. Under this plan, the utility has signed agreements to purchase 43,870 MW of power over the next five years, with installed capacity projected to reach 78,591 MW by 2031-32.#nagpur #maharashtra #devendra_fadnavis #chandrapur #mahavitaran

RTO Employees Stage Statewide Strike Over Promotion Disputes Routine operations at Regional Transport Offices (RTOs) across Maharashtra came to a standstill on Monday as employees launched a one-day strike to protest unresolved promotion issues and other service-related grievances. The protest, which affected citizens seeking transport-related services, left many unable to complete their transactions. Employees accused authorities of delaying promotions for years despite eligibility, with some alleging that previously approved promotions were later revoked by the transport commissioner’s office. Mangesh Kadu, a clerk-cum-typist at Nagpur City RTO, described the situation as deeply frustrating. He stated that employees had repeatedly raised concerns with authorities but received minimal attention. Kadu highlighted that promotions granted by a former transport commissioner were canceled after a new commissioner took charge, leaving staff disillusioned. “Once a promotion is granted, it should not be withdrawn. We opposed the decision, but instead of addressing our concerns, employees were punished,” Kadu said. He also noted that clerical staff demanded revised designations and career progression opportunities, but these requests remained unaddressed. The strike involved all 56 RTO offices in Maharashtra, with approximately 150 employees participating in Nagpur. Another protester, Prashant Ramtake, emphasized the financial strain on lower-ranking staff. He questioned how workers earning between ₹30,000 and ₹40,000 monthly could afford prolonged legal battles to secure rights already approved through administrative channels. Ramtake’s comments underscored the broader discontent among employees struggling to balance their livelihoods with bureaucratic delays.#maharashtra #rto_offices #mangesh_kadu #prashant_ramtake #transport_commissioner
