According to the Hall County Sheriff’s Office, the incident occurred on March 5 when 40-year-old Jason Hughes, a teacher at the school, was fatally struck by a vehicle after a confrontation at a residence on North Gate Drive. Deputies arrived at the scene around 11:40 p.m. following reports that Hughes had been run over. Initial investigation revealed that Jayden Ryan Wallace, the 18-year-old accused, and four others had gathered at the location to roll Hughes’ trees with toilet paper. Wallace and two others stopped to assist Hughes before emergency responders arrived. Hughes was transported to Northeast Georgia Medical Center by Hall County Fire and Rescue but later died from his injuries. Wallace was arrested and charged with first-degree vehicular homicide, reckless driving, criminal trespass, and littering on private property. The other four individuals involved were also arrested and charged with criminal trespass and littering. All are identified as 18-year-old Gainesville residents. A spokesperson for the Hall County School District described Hughes as a “loving husband,” “devoted father,” and “passionate teacher, mentor, and coach” who was deeply respected by students and colleagues.
