357 Govt Offices Haven’t Paid NMC Rs145cr in Property Tax The Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) is facing significant challenges in recovering property tax dues from central and state government departments, which collectively owe over Rs145 crore. Despite efforts to enforce strict penalties and attachment actions against ordinary taxpayers, several government offices have defaulted on payments for years, exacerbating the civic body’s financial strain. As the NMC prepares for a 10% increase in property tax to boost revenue, the civic body’s recovery efforts for the current financial year have fallen short of targets. The revised revenue goal for the year is Rs325 crore, with Rs215 crore already collected and Rs110 crore still outstanding. Officials have intensified collection drives, but the delay in recovering dues from government departments remains a major obstacle. According to official data, 358 government properties in Nagpur owe a total of Rs145.14 crore in property tax. Of these, 270 belong to state government departments, with pending dues amounting to Rs131.19 crore, while 88 central government properties account for Rs13.94 crore in unpaid taxes. The NMC has issued demi-official (DO) letters to all concerned departments, urging them to settle the dues promptly. Among the major defaulters from the central government are BSNL properties, including office buildings and staff quarters in areas like Khalasi Line, Khamla, Nandanvan, and Sakkardara.
