Madhya Pradesh Announces Significant Bus Fare Hike, Raising Costs for Travelers The Madhya Pradesh government has approved a substantial increase in bus fares for passengers, marking a significant rise in travel costs across the state. The decision, which comes nearly five years after the last fare adjustment, involves raising the per-kilometer rate for ordinary buses by 75 paise, bringing the standard fare to 2 rupees per kilometer. The minimum fare for basic services has also been set at 10 rupees, while higher-tier services like sleeper, deluxe, and luxury buses will see increases ranging from 40% to 75% over the base rate. This adjustment has sparked concern among commuters, as it represents a sharp rise in expenses for daily travelers. The fare hike, which took effect immediately after the announcement, is attributed to rising operational costs, particularly the surge in diesel prices. According to Govind Sharma, president of the Prime Route Bus Operators Association, diesel prices have nearly doubled since the last fare increase in April 2021, when the cost was around 79 rupees per liter. Today, the price has climbed to approximately 100 rupees per liter, forcing operators to seek higher revenues to sustain their services. The government has acknowledged the need to address these financial pressures, but the decision has left many passengers grappling with the added burden of higher fares. The new fare structure introduces differentiated rates for various bus categories. For instance, sleeper buses will now cost 40% more than the base rate, while AC deluxe buses will see a 50% increase.
