8-Year Low, A New High: Nagpur Rural Posts 30% Drop In Road Accident Deaths Nagpur rural district recorded 85 fatal accidents resulting in 91 deaths in the first quarter of 2026, marking the lowest fatality count in the region in eight years. This represents a 30% decline in fatalities compared to the same period in 2025 and a 26% reduction in accidents at 18 identified high-fatality black spots. The district ranked third among Maharashtra districts for the lowest road accident rates, reflecting a consistent downward trend in fatalities from 148 in 2022 to 91 in 2026. Fatal crashes dropped from 132 in 2022 to 85 in 2026, underscoring the effectiveness of targeted interventions. The improvement is attributed to the Zero Fatality District (ZFD) programme, a collaborative initiative between Nagpur rural police and SaveLIFE Foundation. The programme employs data analytics to identify high-risk locations, corridors, and behaviors, followed by interventions under the 4Es framework—Engineering, Enforcement, Education, and Emergency Care. Harssh Poddar, Superintendent of Police for Nagpur Rural, highlighted the programme’s success, emphasizing a scientific, multi-stakeholder approach. “Our data-driven strategy, backed by strict enforcement against speeding and dangerous driving, black spot corrections, vehicle fitness checks, and focused public awareness campaigns, has delivered results for the first time at this scale in the district,” Poddar stated. Poddar, known for pioneering AI applications in policing through the MARVEL unit, stressed the importance of sustained focus on rural highways and state roads. While the district’s performance stands out, the state as a whole continues to face challenges, with 36,450 road accidents and 15,549 fatalities recorded in 2025.#harssh_poddar #nagpur_rural #save_lIFE_foundation #zero_fatality_district #marvel_unit

LPG Queues Grow, Police Shield For Agencies Likely Residents in Nagpur are facing growing frustration as long queues form outside LPG agencies amid a severe supply shortage. Cylinder distributors in the district may soon receive police protection to prevent law-and-order issues, as authorities work to manage the crisis. Public anger has intensified as people struggle to secure domestic LPG cylinders, with online booking systems reportedly failing in several areas. This has forced individuals to visit agencies directly, hoping to obtain refills. Waiting times have stretched beyond a month in some cases, leading to crowds gathering outside distribution points. A similar situation recently occurred in Kamptee, where tensions flared at a gas agency, briefly turning volatile. The administration is considering measures to address the crisis, including providing police protection to LPG agencies, delivery vehicles, and distribution staff. During a recent meeting chaired by the chief secretary and attended by officials from across the state, it was decided that police assistance would be provided if large crowds gather during cylinder distribution and agencies request protection, after assessing the law-and-order situation. The district administration has also formed a special committee to monitor LPG availability, headed by collector Dr Vipin Itankar. The committee includes rural SP Harssh Poddar as member secretary, district supply officer Anand Padole, municipal commissioner, and senior officials from HPCL, IOCL, and BPCL. This group will track LPG stocks, coordinate with oil companies, and ensure smoother distribution across the district. Authorities have announced the creation of 24x7 control rooms at both district and municipal levels.#nagpur #kamptee #dr_vipin_itankar #harssh_poddar #anand_padole
