AP Launches ₹3,409.35 Crore Program to Combat Water Shortages Amid El Niño Impact Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu announced a new initiative, Jaladhara-Jalaharathi, aimed at ensuring uninterrupted water supply amid severe drought conditions caused by the El Niño phenomenon. The program, allocated ₹3,409.35 crore, focuses on strengthening water management systems to prevent shortages during the ongoing dry spell. The state government, led by the Telugu Desam Party-Janasena-BJP alliance, emphasized proactive measures to address the crisis, which has led to significant rainfall deficits and water scarcity in multiple districts. The drought, attributed to El Niño, has resulted in below-average rainfall during the monsoon season. According to officials, the state recorded 39% less rainfall than normal, exacerbating water shortages. While reservoirs like Sri Sailam have received some inflow, the water levels remain critically low due to reduced rainfall in the upper catchment areas of Maharashtra and Karnataka. This has disrupted the flow of water into Andhra Pradesh’s rivers, worsening the crisis. Chandrababu Naidu directed authorities to prioritize water conservation and ensure uninterrupted supply to households, agriculture, and industries. During a video conference with officials, he highlighted the need for immediate action to safeguard water resources and protect crops. The Jaladhara-Jalaharathi program will focus on maintaining water availability through infrastructure projects, including the construction of check dams, farm ponds, and trench systems. The initiative includes 82,865 projects, of which 79,826 have been completed.
