The revised estimate is pending final approval from the relevant authorities, while officials confirmed that the land acquisition process has already begun to expedite construction once statutory clearances are secured. The agency has sought permission to acquire 3,117 square meters of land, including portions of Kasturchand Park (KP), the Vasantrao Naik Govt Institute of Arts and Social Sciences campus, and a petrol pump at RBI Square. The Sadar flyover, originally constructed by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) at a cost of 219 crore, was inaugurated in January 2020. However, it quickly became a major traffic bottleneck, prompting criticism from Union Minister Nitin Gadkari, who highlighted flaws in its landing design. As a result, MahaMetro was tasked with redesigning the structure. The new alignment aims to address congestion by rerouting the flyover to bypass Kasturchand Park and pass through RBI Square. The revised design will extend the flyover’s length to approximately 850 meters, including a 270-meter elevated section through Kasturchand Park supported by three piers. Under the updated plan, the existing entry from the Mankapur side will remain unchanged, while the flyover will continue from Liberty Talkies toward the NIT building and LIC Square before passing beneath the Metro viaduct. Kasturchand Park Plea Dismissed as HC Cites Pending PIL on Heritage Protection Nagpur: The Nagpur bench of the Bombay High Court on Tuesday dismissed a public interest litigation (PIL) seeking the reopening of Kasturchand Park for sports and recreational activities. The division bench, comprising Acting Chief Justice Ravindra Ghuge and Justice Rohit Joshi, observed that a separate PIL concerning the preservation of the historic ground is already pending before the court. The court ruled there was no justification for entertaining another petition on the same issue while related proceedings were underway. The PIL was filed by Nishank Nayak, who sought directions to the authorities to open the closed gates of Kasturchand Park and allow citizens to use the ground for sports and other recreational activities. During Monday's hearing, petitioner's counsel Rajesh Nayak argued that Kasturchand Park was once among Nagpur's premier football venues and had hosted several state- and national-level football tournaments. He submitted that many players associated with the ground had represented India at the national and international levels and added that the petitioner himself was a local footballer. Taking note of the submission, the court directed the petitioner to furnish a list of football players from Nagpur who had represented the country at the national and international levels. When the matter came up again on Tuesday, the petitioner submitted the list before the court and further informed the bench that hockey matches were also historically played at the venue.
