Days After Pothole Death, NMC Cracks Whip On Flooding Hotspots & Incomplete Works A 65-year-old woman died after her motorcycle tipped over due to a deep pothole in Nagpur’s Khaparkheda area, prompting the Nagpur Municipal Corporation to intensify efforts to address road safety and monsoon preparedness. The incident, which occurred on April 10, has drawn renewed attention to the deteriorating state of infrastructure in the city, particularly in peri-urban regions. Indubai Bonde, a resident of Khapa Patan, succumbed to her injuries on April 13 after the motorcycle she was riding pillion struck a crater-like pothole near Tandulwani bridge. Police reported that Bonde was traveling with her 25-year-old grandson, Himanshu, when the two-wheeler overturned between 2 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. The elderly woman was initially treated at a hospital in Patansawangi before being transferred to Nagpur for advanced care, where she later died. An accidental death report has been filed, and further investigations are ongoing. The tragedy has intensified calls for improved road safety measures and proactive steps to mitigate flood risks ahead of the monsoon season. At a high-level meeting convened by Shivani Dani-Wakhare, the NMC’s standing committee chairperson, officials from multiple civic and development agencies were directed to prioritize completing ongoing construction projects and identify waterlogging-prone areas. Dani-Wakhare emphasized the need for comprehensive reports on low-lying zones and urged agencies such as MahaMetro, MIHAN, the National Highways Authority of India, and the PWD to finalize their work to prevent water accumulation. The meeting, attended by NMC chief engineer Manoj Talewar and representatives from all 10 zones, also mandated that agencies submit detailed data on their projects to the NMC’s chief engineer.#nagpur #nmc #shivani_dani_wakhare #mihan #mahaMetro

Nagpur Metro Phase 3 Detailed Project Report (DPR) Tender Evaluation Begins, Groundwork Expected in May Nagpur: The tendering process for preparing the detailed project report (DPR) for Nagpur Metro’s Phase 3 has entered the evaluation stage, with two firms competing for the contract. Officials confirmed that the tender has been closed, and MahaMetro has initiated technical scrutiny of the bids to assess the eligibility and capabilities of the participating companies. Once the technical evaluation is complete, financial bids will be opened, and the contract will be awarded to the selected agency. The DPR holds critical importance as it will outline the blueprint for Phase 3, which is envisioned as the largest expansion of the Nagpur Metro to date. The project includes multiple new corridors, such as the Inner Ring Road, Sitabuldi-Koradi, Butibori extension, and the New Nagpur link. Officials stated that once the consultant is appointed, on-ground DPR work is expected to commence in May. This phase will involve comprehensive studies, including traffic and ridership surveys, origin-destination analyses, topographical assessments, and alignment planning. These activities will form the foundation for finalizing the project’s scope and structure. The DPR will also determine key elements such as the number and locations of stations, the design of elevated and underground stretches, interchanges, and integration with existing metro corridors. Once finalized, the report will be submitted to the state government and subsequently to the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs for further approvals. The project’s scale and complexity underscore its significance for Nagpur’s urban development.#nagpur #inner_ring_road #mahaMetro #nagpur_metro_phase_3 #sitabuldi_koradi

Iron Rods Jut Out In 3 Yrs: Cotton Market RuB Turns Into All-Season Nightmare Nagpur: Barely three years after its inauguration on April 1, 2023, the railway under bridge (RuB) at Cotton Market square, constructed by MahaMetro, has rapidly deteriorated into a commuter hazard. Commuters report severe road damage and persistent waterlogging affecting the area throughout the year. While the underpass is prone to flooding during monsoon season, the condition remains hazardous in summer and winter due to a poorly maintained road surface. The stretch near the exit towards Cotton Market from the Tekdi Mandir side is particularly problematic, with exposed steel rods and pipes jutting out near a drainage point. Water stagnation has worsened the road’s condition, creating a surface that resembles mismatched puzzle pieces. Sudden dips and crater-like potholes force motorists to brake abruptly, leading to frequent near-mishaps and traffic disruptions. Deepak Meshram, a daily commuter, described the danger: “It is extremely risky, especially for two-wheeler riders. You don’t realize the depth of the pothole because of the water, and suddenly you have to apply brakes.” Another commuter, Shrikant Navghare, highlighted the safety threat posed by the exposed rods: “If someone loses balance or skids, it can lead to serious injuries. This is a newly built structure—it shouldn’t be in such a condition so soon.” Locals claim the drainage system, intended to mitigate water accumulation, has failed to prevent stagnation even in summer. “The water collects near the drain itself even in summers, which shows something is wrong with the design or maintenance,” said a commuter. “Authorities need to fix this permanently instead of temporary patchwork.#the_times_of_india #mahaMetro #cotton_market_square #tekdi_mandir #ruB

Prof’s Garden Suspected as Terrorists’ Bomb Cache in Nagpur Investigators in Nagpur have identified the quiet residential garden of college principal Ujwal Lanjewar as a potential pick-up or dead-drop location for explosive materials, raising concerns about a possible terror operation. The garden, located at Dosar Bhavan Chowk on Central Avenue, was found to contain 15 gelatin sticks (live cartridges) and 58 detonators, including eight with connectors, concealed in three plastic bags. The total weight of the material was approximately 2kg. The explosives were reportedly left unnoticed for several days, with authorities noting that the location was chosen for its lack of CCTV coverage, complicating the investigation. The garden is situated in a bustling residential and commercial area, within 5km of the RSS headquarters and 1.5km of significant religious sites across different communities. A MahaMetro facility is also nearby, making the location convenient for suspected operatives aiming to minimize travel time and exposure while moving materials toward potential targets. Police sources highlighted that gaps in the garden’s iron fencing made it easier to conceal the explosives. The recovered items, including severed wire connectors on the detonators, were deemed dysfunctional, though officials have not ruled out foul play. The discovery has triggered a high alert across the city, particularly in sensitive areas, as concerns grow that the material could have been used to assemble improvised explosive devices (IEDs) for attacks on crowded or symbolic locations. Intelligence agencies and anti-terror squads are probing whether the cache was part of a larger network sourcing industrial explosives for misuse.#mahaMetro #rss_headquarters #dosar_bhavan_chowk #ujwal_lanjewar #central_avenue

Equipment Worth 17 Lakh Stolen from MahaMetro Site Nagpur: Iron materials valued at 17 lakh rupees were stolen from the Nagpur Metro Phase-2 construction site at Pillar No 130 near Khairi village, Kamptee, on Monday. Tushar Kuhite, a 24-year-old security supervisor from Parseoni working for the construction company, reported the theft. The company provides security for the contractor responsible for the Kamptee corridor portion of the project. The incident occurred around 11 p.m. when unidentified individuals arrived in a truck and a two-wheeler. They loaded pier cap plates and cap top side shuttering materials into the truck before fleeing the scene. When the complainant raised an alarm, the burglars abandoned their motorcycle and fled with the iron materials in the truck. A case has been filed against the unknown individuals under Sections 303(2) and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita at Juni Kamptee Police Station. The police are investigating the incident to identify the culprits and recover the stolen property. The theft highlights vulnerabilities in security measures at construction sites, particularly in remote areas. Authorities are urging increased vigilance and collaboration between security personnel and local law enforcement to prevent such incidents. The stolen materials, which are critical for the Metro project, could delay construction timelines and incur additional costs. The construction company has expressed concern over the loss and is working with the police to expedite the investigation. This incident is part of a series of security breaches reported in recent months, raising questions about the effectiveness of current protocols. Officials have called for a review of security practices at infrastructure projects to mitigate risks.#nagpur #kamptee #mahaMetro #tushar_kuhite #bharatiya_nyaya_sanhita

Despite Delays, Lok Vihar Still On Track To Be 1st Station Of Nagpur Metro Ph2 Nagpur: The Lok Vihar Metro station on the Kamptee Road corridor is progressing toward becoming the first operational station of Nagpur Metro's Phase 2, with September 2025 targeted as the commissioning deadline. Despite prolonged delays caused by the monsoon season last year, which disrupted construction for several months, the station’s core civil and structural work was completed in February. A senior MahaMetro official confirmed that the focus is now on the final stages, including interior design, painting, system installation, and finishing touches. The official noted that work is accelerating to meet the revised schedule. Sources highlighted that shortages of sand in October and November 2024 further slowed progress, leading to partial halts at multiple sites. To mitigate this, both natural and crushed sand are now being utilized. The Kamptee corridor (Reach 2), stretching from Automotive Square to Kanhan, is currently under construction at 11 of its 12 stations. Foundation and superstructure work is advancing at multiple sites, with Lok Vihar being developed as a "model station." MahaMetro reported that work on the Kamptee, Wardha, Hingna, and Bhandara corridors under Phase 2 is progressing rapidly. On the Kamptee corridor alone, 333 out of 487 piers (over 68%) have been erected, and 159 of 488 girder spans (around 35%) are complete. Steel bridges and balanced cantilever structures are also advancing. Of the 32 stations under Phase 2, construction is underway at over 26. On Reach 3 (Lokmanya Nagar to Hingna), Hingna Mount View is expected to be the lead station, while Transport Nagar is likely to take that role on Reach 4. Both remain in early stages compared to Lok Vihar.#nagpur #kamptee_road #mahaMetro #lok_vihar #shravan_hardikar

Dormant Krazy Castle set to rise as big attraction, MahaMetro plans theme park, commercial hub Nagpur: After years of uncertainty following the dismantling of Krazy Castle Aqua Park at Ambazari for the Metro Rail corridor, MahaMetro has announced plans to develop an international-standard amusement and commercial complex at the site. The project, which will span over 5.3 acres near Ambazari Lake, is being floated through an Expression of Interest (EOI) process. The development will be divided into two main components: a 5-acre theme park and a smaller commercial parcel of approximately 1,752 square meters. The commercial area is expected to house revenue-generating facilities, while the theme park will be adjacent to Dharampeth College Metro Station, offering direct connectivity via the Metro network. What distinguishes the project is its Global Village-style concept, which is already partially visible at the site. MahaMetro previously installed facades of iconic global landmarks, including replicas inspired by the Taj Mahal, Eiffel Tower, Statue of Liberty, Disney Castle, and structures resembling Dubai’s skyline. These existing structures will be handed over to the selected developer, who will be responsible for upgrading and integrating them into a fully functional theme park. The developer will also be tasked with creating additional attractions and ensuring the site meets international standards for entertainment and commercial activity. The project is being developed under a public-private partnership (PPP) model, which aims to leverage private sector expertise and investment to bring the site to life. MahaMetro’s EOI process is designed to attract developers capable of executing such a large-scale, multi-faceted project.#nagpur #mahaMetro #krazy_castle #ambazari_lake #dharampeth_college
