Survey Abandoned Mines for Ash Disposal from KTPS | Nagpur News Revenue Minister and Nagpur guardian minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule has directed the Nagpur Metropolitan Region Development Authority (NMRDA) to conduct drone surveys of abandoned mines to identify potential sites for the disposal of ash generated by the Koradi and Khaparkheda thermal power stations. The directive was issued during a special review meeting on ash management held at the District Planning Committee Hall. Bawankule emphasized the need for a permanent solution to the growing ash disposal challenge, as the two thermal power plants produce large quantities of ash that have accumulated in ash ponds. The proposed plan involves NMRDA using drone-based mapping to assess the suitability of abandoned mining areas for ash filling and reclamation activities. This initiative aims to create additional disposal capacity while restoring degraded mining sites. Bawankule stressed the importance of coordinated efforts among all agencies to address the issue on a priority basis. He instructed user agencies such as NHAI, NIT, PWD, MOIL, and WCL to submit their ash requirements within 15 days to facilitate the utilization of pond ash in infrastructure and mine-filling projects. To monitor implementation, a special committee comprising three chief engineers of Mahagenco has been formed. The committee will review progress every fortnight and oversee ash generation, transportation, and utilization. Bawankule also called for increased use of pond ash as an alternative to river sand, directing WCL and MOIL to prioritize its use for mine reclamation and filling works in accordance with DGMS guidelines.#koradi_thermal_power_station #chandrashekhar_bawankule #nagpur_metropolitan_region_development_authority #khaparkheda_thermal_power_station #district_planning_committee_hall

8 workers injured after steam leak at Koradi power plant, 2nd incident in just over a month Eight workers were injured at the Koradi Thermal Power Station, located approximately 15 kilometers from Nagpur, after steam unexpectedly escaped from a boiler peephole on Monday morning. This incident marks the second such accident at the state-run power plant in just over a month, raising concerns about safety protocols at the facility. The accident occurred during slag removal work on a 13-meter-high platform at unit no. 10, which was closed for maintenance at the time. The steam leak happened around 10:20 a.m., according to a statement issued by Maharashtra State Power Generation Company (Mahagenco). The injured workers included four Mahagenco employees and four contract laborers, identified as Sachin Bhagewar, Vivek Patil, Tejas Sonawane, AK Kazi, Nikhil Jayatgude, Kamlesh Barmate, Gulabsing Tikam, and Vilas Bansod. They were rushed to a private hospital in Nagpur, where they were triaged, stabilized, and transferred to dedicated care. While four patients are reported to be stable and receiving appropriate medical treatment, four others sustained relatively severe injuries and are being closely monitored by a team of specialists. This incident follows a similar accident on March 11, when four workers suffered minor burn injuries to their hands and legs after steam allegedly leaked from a pipeline in the turbine maintenance section of a 660 MW unit. Mahagenco stated that immediate medical assistance was provided to the injured, and the situation was brought under control swiftly. The company has initiated an internal safety audit to investigate the incident, stating that no prima facie violation of safety norms was observed so far.#nagpur #devendra_fadnavis #chhattisgarh #mahagenco #koradi_thermal_power_station

State Clears Rs39.2 Crore for Koradi Supercritical Power Project The Maharashtra state government has approved the release of Rs39.20 crore as part of its equity contribution for the ongoing 2x660 MW supercritical thermal power project at the Koradi Thermal Power Station. This approval marks a significant step forward for the ambitious energy initiative, which is being executed by the Maharashtra State Power Generation Company Limited (Mahagenco). The project received administrative approval in December 2023 with an estimated total cost of Rs10,625 crore. The financial structure of the project involves mobilizing 80% of the cost—Rs8,500 crore—through loans from financial institutions such as the Power Finance Corporation (PFC), Rural Electrification Corporation (REC), and a consortium of banks. The remaining 20%, amounting to Rs2,125 crore, is to be provided by the state government as equity in a phased manner. The Koradi thermal power plant expansion is considered a critical component of Maharashtra’s strategy to enhance its base-load power capacity using high-efficiency supercritical technology. Once completed, the project is expected to significantly boost electricity generation in the Vidarbha region and support the state’s growing energy demands. According to the government notification, the project’s expenditure reached Rs1,723 crore during the financial year 2025-26, with Mahagenco contributing the majority of the funds. However, the state government’s committed portion was only partially allocated in the budget for the year, with Rs56 crore provisioned. The Finance Department has permitted the utilization of 70% of the earmarked funds, enabling the release of the latest tranche of Rs39.20 crore.#power_finance_corporation #maharashtra_state_government #mahagenco #koradi_thermal_power_station #rural_electrification_corporation
