8 workers injured after steam leak at Koradi power plant, 2nd incident in just over a month Eight workers were injured at the Koradi Thermal Power Station, located approximately 15 kilometers from Nagpur, after steam unexpectedly escaped from a boiler peephole on Monday morning. This incident marks the second such accident at the state-run power plant in just over a month, raising concerns about safety protocols at the facility. The accident occurred during slag removal work on a 13-meter-high platform at unit no. 10, which was closed for maintenance at the time. The steam leak happened around 10:20 a.m., according to a statement issued by Maharashtra State Power Generation Company (Mahagenco). The injured workers included four Mahagenco employees and four contract laborers, identified as Sachin Bhagewar, Vivek Patil, Tejas Sonawane, AK Kazi, Nikhil Jayatgude, Kamlesh Barmate, Gulabsing Tikam, and Vilas Bansod. They were rushed to a private hospital in Nagpur, where they were triaged, stabilized, and transferred to dedicated care. While four patients are reported to be stable and receiving appropriate medical treatment, four others sustained relatively severe injuries and are being closely monitored by a team of specialists. This incident follows a similar accident on March 11, when four workers suffered minor burn injuries to their hands and legs after steam allegedly leaked from a pipeline in the turbine maintenance section of a 660 MW unit. Mahagenco stated that immediate medical assistance was provided to the injured, and the situation was brought under control swiftly. The company has initiated an internal safety audit to investigate the incident, stating that no prima facie violation of safety norms was observed so far.#nagpur #devendra_fadnavis #chhattisgarh #mahagenco #koradi_thermal_power_station

Power Tariffs To Drop With High-Quality Coal From Gare Palma: Fadnavis Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced on Sunday that the supply of high-quality coal from the Gare Palma Sector-II mine in Chhattisgarh will significantly reduce electricity tariffs and bolster Maharashtra’s long-term energy security. The coal, with a gross calorific value of approximately 4,300, is expected to improve power generation efficiency and lower fuel costs compared to the current coal supply, which has a calorific value of around 2,800. Fadnavis emphasized that the higher-quality coal would require less quantity to produce the same amount of electricity, leading to substantial cost savings that would directly benefit consumers. The chief minister highlighted that the improved coal quality would also enhance generation capacity while reducing environmental impact due to more efficient combustion. “This creates a strong value proposition—lower costs, better efficiency, and environmental benefits,” he stated. Fadnavis noted that the Gare Palma coal mine was allocated to Mahagenco, Maharashtra’s state-run power company, as part of a historic decision by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to provide captive coal blocks to state-run power companies. Despite facing significant challenges, including environmental clearances and land acquisition hurdles, the project has now become operational after nearly eight years of sustained efforts. Fadnavis praised the progress, stating that the mine, which has an estimated operational life of 77 years, will ensure a steady and reliable coal supply. This development is expected to reduce Maharashtra’s reliance on external coal sources, marking a major step toward fuel self-reliance.#devendra_fadnavis #chhattisgarh #narendra_moddi #mahagenco #gare_palma_sector_ii

After Decade, Mahagenco’s Gare Palma-II Mine Delivers First Coal Rake To Koradi Nagpur: Marking a major milestone in Maharashtra's push for energy security, state-run Mahagenco on Sunday received the first coal rake from its Gare Palma Sector-II captive mine at the Koradi Thermal Power Station — more than a decade after the block was allocated. The Gare Palma Sector-II mine in Chhattisgarh has a life of 77 years. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis flagged off the rake in the presence of Revenue Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule, calling it a "historic step" toward fuel self-reliance. He emphasized that sourcing coal from Mahagenco's own mine would stabilize supply, reduce costs, and ultimately benefit consumers across the state. The Gare Palma Sector-II coal block, located in Tamnar tehsil of Raigarh district in Chhattisgarh, was allotted to Mahagenco by the Union coal ministry in March 2015. Spanning 2,583 hectares — including 214 hectares of forest land — and covering 14 villages, the mine holds an estimated reserve of 655 million metric tonnes of coal, with a peak production capacity of 23.6 million tonnes per annum. Despite its scale, the project faced years of delays due to land acquisition challenges and multiple statutory clearances. In March 2021, Mahagenco appointed Gare Palma II Collieries Ltd, a subsidiary of Adani Enterprises, as the mine developer and operator. Over the next few years, critical approvals — including environmental and forest clearances, mining lease and operational consents — were secured. The Centre granted final mine opening permission in July 2025, and overburden removal began in September of the same year.#devendra_fadnavis #chhattisgarh #adani_enterprises #mahagenco #koradi

State Clears Rs39.2 Crore for Koradi Supercritical Power Project The Maharashtra state government has approved the release of Rs39.20 crore as part of its equity contribution for the ongoing 2x660 MW supercritical thermal power project at the Koradi Thermal Power Station. This approval marks a significant step forward for the ambitious energy initiative, which is being executed by the Maharashtra State Power Generation Company Limited (Mahagenco). The project received administrative approval in December 2023 with an estimated total cost of Rs10,625 crore. The financial structure of the project involves mobilizing 80% of the cost—Rs8,500 crore—through loans from financial institutions such as the Power Finance Corporation (PFC), Rural Electrification Corporation (REC), and a consortium of banks. The remaining 20%, amounting to Rs2,125 crore, is to be provided by the state government as equity in a phased manner. The Koradi thermal power plant expansion is considered a critical component of Maharashtra’s strategy to enhance its base-load power capacity using high-efficiency supercritical technology. Once completed, the project is expected to significantly boost electricity generation in the Vidarbha region and support the state’s growing energy demands. According to the government notification, the project’s expenditure reached Rs1,723 crore during the financial year 2025-26, with Mahagenco contributing the majority of the funds. However, the state government’s committed portion was only partially allocated in the budget for the year, with Rs56 crore provisioned. The Finance Department has permitted the utilization of 70% of the earmarked funds, enabling the release of the latest tranche of Rs39.20 crore.#power_finance_corporation #maharashtra_state_government #mahagenco #koradi_thermal_power_station #rural_electrification_corporation
