NMC Races To Clear Flood Sludge Heavy rains that hit Nagpur on Tuesday left thick layers of sludge, silt, and debris across several neighborhoods, prompting the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) to launch an extensive clean-up operation. The Solid Waste Management (SWM) department began its efforts on Wednesday, focusing on removing sludge from residential areas and clearing mud from roads to restore traffic flow. Workers manually extracted the sludge from narrow lanes in areas like Azad Nagar, Krishna Nagar in Gittikhadan, Katol Road, Swawlambi Nagar, Narendra Nagar, Narsala, and the Inner Ring Road. Earthmoving machines were deployed on wider roads where floodwaters had left large deposits of mud and debris. In some locations, workers used pickaxes and shovels to break up hardened silt before loading it onto trucks for disposal. Residents reported that the most significant challenge after the flooding was the thick sludge that had seeped into homes, shops, and streets, making movement difficult and raising concerns about mosquito breeding and potential disease outbreaks. In some areas, parked vehicles were partially buried under mud and had to be dug out before they could be moved. Officials emphasized that the priority was to restore normalcy by ensuring roads, internal lanes, and public spaces in the worst-affected areas were accessible as soon as possible.
