Supreme Court Rejects Mahua Moitra's Request to Appear Virtually in Police Station The Supreme Court on Friday rejected the request of TMC MP Mahua Moitra to appear virtually before a police station in a case linked to a controversial Facebook post. The case stems from a police FIR filed against Moitra in June, following allegations that she made inflammatory remarks in two videos posted on social media. The FIR was lodged after a BJP leader accused her of inciting unrest. The incident escalated when BJP supporters allegedly gathered with tomatoes and eggs in Krishnanagar to throw at Moitra, prompting her to seek legal protection. Moitra’s lawyer, Gopal Shankar Narayanan, had argued that she should appear via video conferencing to avoid potential mob attacks. During the Supreme Court hearing, the lawyer cited previous incidents where she faced threats and physical assaults at the police station. However, the court dismissed the plea, emphasizing that Moitra’s fear of eggs was unwarranted given the historical context of political activism. Justice Deepankar Datta and Justice Sheel Nagu, the bench presiding over the case, rejected Moitra’s concerns. Datta remarked, “If you are a politician, why are you afraid of eggs? Our freedom fighters faced bullets in their chests. Such petitions should not even reach the court.” The court also cited a previous order from the Kolkata High Court, which had directed Moitra to appear before the investigating agency on August 14.
