Dialysis To New Kidney To Doctorate: Tale Of Grit Amit Jaiswal, a teacher from Nagpur, has become a symbol of resilience after overcoming life-threatening health challenges, including years of dialysis, a prolonged recovery from Covid-19, and a kidney transplant, to earn a PhD in English. His journey, which coincided with World Organ Donation Day on August 13, highlights the transformative power of organ donation and the determination of individuals to pursue their dreams despite adversity. Jaiswal, an English language faculty member at Shivaji Science College, was awarded his doctoral degree by Nagpur University on August 6, with the formal ceremony scheduled for the university’s next convocation. Jaiswal’s health struggles began in 2019 after a severe accident that led to progressive medical deterioration. His condition worsened to the point of kidney failure, requiring him to undergo daily dialysis. Compounding his challenges, he contracted Covid-19, which took nearly three months to recover from. Despite his deteriorating health, Jaiswal cleared the Maharashtra State Eligibility Test (MH-SET) and enrolled for a PhD in English. His academic pursuit was further complicated by the kidney transplant he received in 2023, performed by his mother, which doctors described as granting him a “new lease of life.” The transplant and its post-operative care presented their own hurdles, yet Jaiswal chose to continue his studies rather than let his illness define his future. He registered for his PhD in 2022 under the supervision of English professor Kapil Singhel.
