Higher EPS Pension: Government Expedites Verification Amid Pending Applications The Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has received over 15.24 lakh applications for higher Employees' Pension Scheme (EPS) pensions, with 11,595 cases still pending as of August 5, 2026. This follows a Supreme Court ruling in November 2022 that allowed eligible employees to opt for higher pensions by contributing based on their real basic salaries, which often exceed the Rs 15,000 wage ceiling. The government has directed regional EPFO offices and employers to accelerate the verification process for these applications. Under the existing rules, employers typically contribute to the EPS account based on a wage ceiling of Rs 15,000. However, employees who have contributed using their actual basic salaries—often higher than the ceiling—can now claim a higher pension upon retirement or exit from the scheme. This change was made possible after the Supreme Court's November 4, 2022, ruling, which recognized the right of such employees to access enhanced pension benefits. The EPFO has compiled data on the distribution of applications across various regions. Punjab and Himachal Pradesh accounted for 44,946 applications, with 3,004 pending. Delhi, Uttarakhand, and Jammu received 95,419 applications, of which 1,389 remain unresolved. Maharashtra (excluding Mumbai) saw 1,26,311 applications, with 1,380 pending. Other regions, including Orissa, Kerala, and Tamil Nadu, also reported significant numbers of applications, though the pending cases varied. The highest number of pending applications was recorded in Telangana (Hyderabad), where 1,65,331 applications were received, with only 501 remaining unresolved.
