Vidarbha Rain Deficit Widens as Monsoon Takes a Brief Break Nagpur: The prolonged lull in monsoon activity in August has begun to erode the gains made during July, with Nagpur's cumulative rainfall deficit widening sharply to 21% by August 12, compared to just 7% at the end of July. Across Vidarbha, the cumulative deficit has risen to 13%, up from 1% at the end of July, according to rainfall data from June 1 to August 12. The region received 532.1mm of rainfall during this period, falling short of the normal 611.8mm. Nagpur recorded 483mm against its normal of 610.6mm, leaving a deficit of 21%. Amravati saw a 26% deficit, Akola 20%, Chandrapur 22%, Gadchiroli 18%, Wardha 13%, and Washim 16%. Yavatmal remained nearly normal with a 0% deficit, while Buldhana and Gondia retained a 10% surplus each. The deterioration is particularly evident when compared to the end-July position. Vidarbha had received 481.7mm against the normal 484.7mm by July 31, putting the subdivision just 1% below normal. Nagpur, too, was only 7% deficient at that point, having recorded 454.7mm against its normal of 491.2mm. July brought a dramatic turnaround after a weak start to the monsoon. The region experienced several active rainfall spells during the month, culminating in intense downpours on July 30-31 when a deep depression moved across Vidarbha. The Regional Meteorological Centre’s July report noted heavy to very heavy rain at many locations, with extremely heavy rainfall at isolated spots. Yavatmal recorded 222.7mm on July 31, and Ballarpur saw 178.3mm on July 30. The situation could improve in the coming days. One in Every Three Road Accident Deaths in Nagpur Involves Pedestrians Traffic police data from Nagpur reveals a concerning trend in road safety, with pedestrians accounting for nearly a third of all road accident fatalities over the past three years. Between January 2024 and August 2026, 776 people were killed in 3,129 road accidents, of which 247 were pedestrians. This represents approximately 32% of all fatalities during the period. This year, the trend continues, with 49 pedestrians killed in the first eight months of 2026, contributing to 29.9% of the 164 fatalities recorded by August. These statistics come amid a broader decline in road accidents and fatalities. The city recorded 701 accidents in the first eight months of 2026, a 15.1% drop compared to 826 accidents during the same period in 2025. Fatal accidents fell by 21.7%, from 198 to 155, while deaths decreased by 21.9%, from 210 to 164. The number of injured individuals also dropped by 11.2%, from 752 to 668. This improvement is attributed to intensified efforts by traffic police under DCP (Traffic) Aditya Mirkhelkar, including surprise checks and stricter enforcement measures.
