Delhi Government Launches Ambitious EV Policy to Boost Charging Infrastructure and Promote Electric Vehicles Delhi’s government has unveiled a comprehensive electric vehicle (EV) policy aimed at significantly expanding the city’s charging infrastructure and accelerating the adoption of electric transportation. The policy sets a target of increasing the number of charging points from approximately 9,000 to 32,000 by 2030, with a focus on making EV ownership accessible and convenient for residents. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta emphasized that the initiative is designed to address the growing demand for electric vehicles while ensuring a seamless transition for users. A key component of the policy is the introduction of a single-window clearance system for setting up charging stations. This system streamlines the approval process, reducing bureaucratic hurdles and enabling faster deployment of infrastructure. Gupta highlighted that the Delhi Transco Limited (DTL) has been designated as the nodal agency for this initiative, while electricity distribution companies and housing societies will also play a role in developing charging infrastructure at the local level. The policy also extends beyond just charging stations. It includes provisions for battery recycling, e-waste management, and planning for future electricity demands. Gupta noted that as the number of electric vehicles increases, the city’s power grid and sub-stations will need to be strengthened to meet the rising energy needs. This proactive approach aims to prevent potential shortages and ensure a reliable power supply for EVs. Financial incentives are a central part of the policy to encourage adoption.
