Man Pronounces Triple Talaq On Wife At Second Wedding Venue, Named In FIR A 36-year-old man allegedly violated the ban on triple talaq by uttering “talaq, talaq, talaq” three times to his first wife in front of witnesses at a wedding reception venue in Nagpur on Tuesday afternoon. The incident occurred when the woman, who had married the man in December 2012, arrived at the second wedding venue to confront him about his impending second marriage. The case has been registered under the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Act, 2019, at Kotwali police station. The woman, a resident of Mahal, had been married to Mobin Ahmed Mohd Rafiq Shaikh under Muslim customs. Their relationship deteriorated significantly since 2021, and they have a nine-year-old son together. A matrimonial dispute has been pending in court since 2024. On July 14, the woman learned that her husband was planning a second wedding at a hall near Awasthi Nagar chowk in Gittikhadan. She and her family members arrived at the venue around 2 p.m., just as the wedding reception was about to begin. When she questioned her husband about the second marriage, he allegedly declared triple talaq on the spot, stating, “I am divorcing you and you can do whatever you want.” The Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Act, 2019, criminalizes the practice of instant triple talaq, making it punishable with up to three years of imprisonment and a fine. The law was introduced to protect Muslim women from arbitrary divorce and ensure their rights are upheld. Police have initiated an investigation following the complainant’s request for justice and protection for herself and her minor son. Senior police officers confirmed that witness statements are being recorded, and legal action will be taken as per the law.
