His portrayal of the warden in the 1975 blockbuster Sholay remains etched in cinematic memory—a perfect blend of humour and subtlety. According to reports, Asrani had been admitted to the hospital in Juhu, Mumbai due to a fluid accumulation in his lungs, and passed away around 3:30 pm on October 20, 2025. His last rites were held promptly at the Santacruz Crematorium in Mumbai that same evening.
